Enhancing Baseball Performance and Preventing Injuries.

Quick Facts

Step 1

1 in 4 young players suffer from arm or shoulder injuries.

Step 2

3motionAI’s Pitch AI technology has made lab grade biomechanics accessible to every player and coach.

Step 3

3motionAI delivered an initial assessment to determine performance analysis data which identified weakness in the upper arm plane, trunk rotation and maximum layback which once adjusted directly improved player performance and reduce pain and injury.

Introduction

Baseball is a sport played by over 6 million youths worldwide and has seen a rise in specialized training among young players. With an increasing emphasis on position-specific programs and velocity training, many youth programs in the United States have adopted these training practices without proper medical supervision. This shift has led to a spike in overuse injuries and arm-related issues among players.

Challenge

A cohort study conducted by Flesig et al. highlighted the severity of the issue, revealing a 5% surgery rate among players followed over a decade. The study found that 1 in 4 players suffered from arm injuries, translating to an incidence rate of 25.6 arm injuries per 100 athletes. Such alarmingly high statistics highlight the need for interventions to address the problem of upper extremity injuries in baseball.

Solution

In 2019, Adapt Physical Therapy and Player Development was established with a mission to integrate sports performance, biomechanics, and physical therapy. The goal was to raise awareness about the prevailing issues and provide preventive assessments, biomechanical evaluations, and trackman technology-based training to coaches, players, and parents. To date, Adapt Physical Therapy has collaborated with 12 college baseball and softball teams in Kansas, as well as numerous high school and club teams, significantly reducing surgery and injury rates.

Central to the success has been the utilization of 3motionAI’s PitchAI technology. 3motionAI’s innovative solution offers clients access to a virtual physical therapist and biomechanics lab, bridging the socioeconomic gap by providing affordable biomechanics and physical therapy assessments. With 3motionAI, coaches, players, and teams can access top-tier resources without incurring exorbitant costs, democratizing access to high-quality training facilities and injury prevention tools.

Results

To illustrate the impact of this approach, let’s consider the case of Zach, a right-handed pitcher at Cloud County Community College. Zach started school in August 2023 with a history of shoulder, elbow, and hip pain. Despite his talent, he struggled to maintain a consistent velocity, often seeing a drop in speed during the second innings of his outings. Recognizing the need for intervention, Zach’s coaches referred him to Adapt Physical Therapy in December 2023. Utilizing 3motionAI for initial biomechanical assessments, extreme limitations in Zach’s mechanics were identified, including issues with shoulder external rotation, trunk rotation, upper arm plane, and forward trunk tilt. Over the next six weeks, with targeted physical therapy corrective exercises and tailored throwing routines, Zach made significant improvements in his biomechanics, enhancing his velocity to 90-92.9 mph and improving his slider movement. Notably, Zach achieved these improvements without resorting to extreme training methods and successfully eliminated the shoulder, elbow, and hip pain he had been experiencing. His coaches were highly pleased with his development, and Zach’s success story stands as a testament to the efficiency of 3motionAI’s solution.

In conclusion, the collaboration Adapt Physical Therapy and 3motionAI is revolutionizing baseball training, making it safer, more accessible, and more effective for young athletes across the United States.
